Republicans plan expanded assault on food stamps

House Republicans, who failed in an earlier effort to cut $40 billion in food spending for the poor, now are planning to try again and double the cut in food stamps to $80 billion, Huffington Post reports.

The Arkansas Republican delegation has been fond of cutting food assistance generally, save some misgivings at times by Rep. Rick Crawford, whose farm district suffers from the divisive battle Republicans like Tom Cotton are waging on agriculture spending.

Arkansas families — emphasis families with children — rely heavily on the supplemental nutrition program.
