A back-bench legislator's support for an extremist gubernatorial candidate isn't big news, but I'll mention anyway that Republican Rep. Richard Womack of Arkadelphia has endorsed Curtis Coleman for governor.
It's a good example of how extreme Womack is. And perhaps some encouragement for those who think Womack's win in a Democratic friendly district was a fluke driven by the mixed-blessing support of former Sen. Percy Malone for Democratic challenger Fred Harris. Malone inspires strong feelings, not always positive.
Democrats are pushing hard for a well-known Arkadelphia lawyer to make the race this year. If Democrats are to mount a successful bid to retake the state House, some turnovers will be critical and this is one on the list. Womack has endeavored to make himself politically bulletproof by demagoguing guns. Womack's other limited legislative record includes a died-a-borning measure to say the state could not interfere with "the fundamental right of a parent to direct and govern the care, custody, and control of his or her child."
