Environmentalists I've seen commenting are wide-eyed at President Obama's tough speech on climate change and the need to further regulate greenhouse gases.

From Talking Points Memo on his assertion that regulations wouldn't kill jobs:

"When we ended cancer-causing plastics, it didn't kill off the plastic industry," Obama said at what was billed as a major speech on climate at Georgetown University in Washington. "Don't bet against American industry."

"Don't tell folks that we have to choose between the health of our children and the health of our economy," he added.

There's a lot more to come. But I note Walmart hurried out a statement praising the president. They tell me the little ol' discount store chain is a player.

We applaud the President and his administration for their commitment to renewable energy and conservation. Investing in renewable energy and energy conservation are good for business, good for communities and good for the environment. When we use less energy, that’s less energy we have to buy, and that means less waste and more savings for our customers. Over the last few years we’ve made meaningful progress towards our goal to be supplied by 100 percent renewable energy. Walmart now has over 300 renewable energy projects in operation or under development around the world, and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has named us the number one user of onsite renewable energy. As we continue on our journey we will continue to leverage our scale in purchasing energy so we can drive down technology costs and make renewable power more affordable for everyone.

— Mike Duke, Walmart President and CEO

Here's more from NY Times on Obama's ideas, most of which rely on executive action. Good thing, because passing anything in the dysfunctional, extremist-controlled Congress is a non-starter.
