Dr. Betty Lowe, who is credited with transforming Arkansas Children's Hospital from a small, 45-bed hospital, to a hospital of national stature, died yesterday.

In an email to the Children's Hospital faculty, Dr. Richard Jacobs wrote, "We will all miss Betty terribly; the children of AR and ACH, the DOP, UAMS and everyone interested in children and children’s issues lost a giant and a legend last night."

Lowe was not only medical director of Children's but also the associate dean for Children's Affairs of the UAMS College of Medicine and the first recipient of the Harvey and Bernice Jones Distinguished Chair in Pediatrics at UAMS. She also won awards from Rotary International, the UAMS Chancellor's Award and the Golden Apple Award, presented by her students, according to the National Library of Medicine.

We'll post funeral arrangements when we can.

Visitation is 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Cornwell Funeral Home in Danville. There will be a graveside service at 10 a.m. Saturday at Bluffton Cemetery in Bluffton.
