Last Friday, a fake gun was reported by students at Hall High to the administration. On Monday, a student brought a real .9mm gun, unloaded, and a loaded clip to Hall, detected by a random scan of classrooms. On Tuesday, the Little Rock School District sent a letter to Dunbar Middle School parents informing them that two unloaded BB guns were found in separate 6th grade lockers at school. The district said a teacher noticed two students acting strangely and notified administrators and security. The students could be expelled, according to the district's Student Handbook.
Letter to parents on the jump.
Incident at Dunbar Middle School
February 26, 2013
Good Evening, Parents:
Today, LRSD Safety and Security personnel at Dunbar Middle School found two unloaded BB guns in separate 6th grade lockers. An alert teacher noticed two students behaving strangely and immediately relayed that concern to school administrators and to Safety and Security staff. No ammunition was found but the guns were confiscated and police were called. The students will be sanctioned according to the Student Handbook.
We want to assure parents of the District's commitment to safety and security. Here are ways LRSD reinforces those measures district-wide:
* Security systems, including use of hand-held scanning devices, cameras, Little Rock police officers, LRSD Safety and Security officers, school visibility plans, teacher monitoring of hallways, and the alertness of many students, contribute to our sense and practice for the safety of students and staff.
* LRSD requires quarterly scans of all students on campuses, three random scans of students and two random scans of lockers. Schools may elect to do them more frequently.
* Use of a hotline and reliance on call-ins that provide critical input for overall security efforts.
Please be assured we are constantly working to ensure the safety of all students and staff. We will provide you additional information as warranted. If you have further concerns or questions, feel free to contact principal, Eunice Thrasher at Eunice.Thrasher@lrsd.org.
