John Ward, journalist and author, dies

News comes from Times columnist Ernie Dumas that John L. Ward, 82, the journalist and author of "The Arkansas Rockefeller" and "Winthrop Rockefeller, Philanthropist" died Thursday of cancer.

Ward, a PR man for Winthrop Rockefeller and manager of one of his successful campaigns for governor, was honored last year by UALR as a Distinguished Alumnus. UALR's announcement of the award said Ward worked full time at the Arkansas Democrat while in college at what was then Little Rock University. He was later managing editor of the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, where he founded Toad Suck Daze, and was president of the UCA Foundation. He had been living on his family's farm near Bee Branch.
