Pulaski teachers protest

I'm way behind on this, but I thought I'd post anyway, belatedly, the release I got yesterday from the Pulaski Association of Classroom Teachers threatening a strike over the state's refusal to recognize their contract with the district.

They may have a winner legally — the state has broad power to take control of a school district, but whether it can unilaterally nullify a superintendent's or a teachers' contract just because it prefers to do so is a very good question. Politically, however, the union is not in a strong position, particularly without a school board majority that owed its election to union organizing.

The Pulaski Couny School District's continued existence — given money, pressure for Jacksonville independence and a growing belief in some quarters that reorganization of the three Pulaski districts is one route out of the lingering desegregation case — is a question the 2013 legislature is likely to take up.
