Students at UALR have set up a temporary memorial and will hold a candlelight vigil to mark the one-year anniversary of the murder of UALR student Patricia Garcia Guardado, who disappeared on her way to class on Oct. 12, 2011. Her body was found floating in a flooded rock quarry near Sweet Home four days later. The crime remains unsolved. Back in April, the Arkansas Times published a cover story about Guardado's murder and the aftermath for those who loved her.

Members of UALR's chapter of Sigma Delta Pi, the Spanish honor society, set up a memorial on the second floor of UALR's Donaghey Student Center on Oct. 5, and will maintain it through the Mexican Day of the Dead on Nov. 3.

There will be a candlelight vigil in honor of Guardado and other victims of violence against women at 7:30 p.m. on Wed. Oct. 17 in front of the Donaghey Student Center, At the vigil, organizers will be accepting donations for Safe Places, a non-profit that helps victims of violence and abuse.
