Appearing today at the Political Animals Club, McDaniel threw support behind Gov. Mike Beebe's decision to support the Medicaid expansion provided by the Obama health care legislation. Of course. He has a brain. More money for Arkansas. More medical coverage for 250,000 Arkansans. The salvation of small hospitals and other health operations. A continued flow of more to pay doctors, nurses and all the many services, vendors and colleagues they rely on. Of course.
Republicans vow to repeal Obamacare, to block Medicaid expansion and to trim spending on health care by every means possible so as to reduce income taxes for the wealthy. Their polls show that a majority of Arkansans favor Republicans reflexively. Maybe there is a reason we rank so low in education, income and other indices of well-being.
It will take the vote of only 26 Republicans in the House or nine in the Senate to kill health care coverage for 250,000 Arkansans. Think about that election day.
McDaniel is not on the ballot until 2014. If this fight tracks the fight by Republicans years ago to defeat Medicare, opposition to Obamacare will dwindle and die as its manifest benefits become clear to citizens. Or else Republicans will prevail and a Koch-directed oligarchy will rule us all.
