Some grim back-to-school news —

According to a research gathered by the national nonprofit Share our Strength, 73 percent of Arkansas public school teachers say they have students who regularly come to school hungry. Seventy-one percent of the Arkansas teachers surveyed say that "a lot" or "most" of their students' primary nutrition comes from school meals. The survey was conducted among over 1,000 K-8 public school teachers nationwide, with an oversampling in Arkansas.

Nationwide, three out of five of the teachers surveyed said that students regularly come to school hungry. These teachers report spending about $26 a month out of their own pocket to feed hungry students. No Kid Hungry Arkansas has more information.

On a brighter note —

Talk Business reports that Arkansas students' ACT scores rose nearly a full composite point, to average 20.3, in 2012.
