Empire State Building Shooting this morning

Around 9 a.m. this morning, multiple people (as many as nine, according to some reports) were shot outside the Empire State Building. According to New York police, the gunman is dead. No details at the moment. We don't know the extent of the injuries or if police shot the gunman.

The Washington Post pointed out that in Chicago last night, 19 people were shot, but this information isn't making national news the way that the Empire State shootings are. And in national news in the past month, we have the Aurora, Colorado "Dark Knight" shootings on July 20, the Aug. 5 shootings at the Sikh temple in Milwaukee and the Aug. 13 shootings on the fringes of the Texas A&M campus.

Tonight from 8 to 8:30 p.m., there will be a Little Rock vigil for the victims of the Sikh temple shootings, held near the flag hoisting area at the entrance to the State Capitol. (No candles allowed per Capitol rules, but flashlights are welcome.) Speakers include Dr. Sunny Anand representing the Sikh community: Sopia Said representing the Muslim faith; Rev. Stephen Copley representing the Christian faith; Dr. Vyas representing the Hindu faith; and Sam Kauffman representing humanity in general.
