Dean Lee out as ASU athletic director

Dean Lee, athletic director at Arkansas State University since 2002, is apparently on his way out of the job.

Arkansas Sports 360 says it anticipates an announcement that Lee will be reassigned to a university fund-raising job and a new A.D. will be hired.

Lee was the point man in the recent hire of Gus Malzahn as football coach, generally viewed as a major plus for the school.

UPDATE: Channel 4 reports that Doug Abel, who'd been senior associate athletic director, will serve as interim director. What this is about remains anyone's guess. Here's the news release. Boilerplate yadda yadda. Lee will continue to make $150,000 as an associate vice chancellor in university advancement.

Jim Harris at Arkansas Sports 360 speculates that the shift is related to a need to up the money-raising to pay for the big tab necessary to lure Malzahn. Maybe that means Lee will now work full-time on begging for money and leave athletics management to others.
