A New York Times story today talks about how the brutal summer of 2012 is burning county and state fairs across the country. Stressed-out farmers and ranchers. Limp vegetables. Skinny livestock.
It's a good chance to say how much I always liked the early fall dates of the Arkansas State Fair and Livestock Show. Seems like, in the olden days, you could always count on a cold snap for at least one night at the fair. You'd need a jacket for a night in the beer tents. And there's nothing like the smell of spun sugar, candy apples and frying corn dogs on the crisp night air — mixed with a little barnyard aroma, of course.
