Admission: No need for Pa. voter ID law

Pennsylvania Republicans hope to win the state for Romney and otherwise solidify the state for Republicans with a new voter ID law intended to suppress the vote of Democratic constituencies — poor, elderly, minorities.

In a moment of candor, however, the backers of the voter ID law have at least been honest for once in the face of a Justice Department review:

The state signed a stipulation agreement with lawyers for the plaintiffs which acknowledges there “have been no investigations or prosecutions of in-person voter fraud in Pennsylvania; and the parties do not have direct personal knowledge of any such investigations or prosecutions in other states.”

Additionally, the agreement states Pennsylvania “will not offer any evidence in this action that in-person voter fraud has in fact occurred in Pennsylvania and elsewhere” or even argue “that in person voter fraud is likely to occur in November 2012 in the absense of the Photo ID law.”

Truth: They just want to suppress Democratic votes. Period. Same motivation at work in Arkansas and other states where this Koch-financed ideas has been promoted by the likes of Republican Rep. Nate Bell (whose wife is on the payroll of a Koch-funded lobby).
