SHOOTING SCENE: CNN has cellphone video of chaos at theater.

A 24-year-old gunman is in custody following a mass slaughter in an Aurora, Colo., theater early this morning during the screening of "The Dark Knight Rises." He didn't resist when police arrested him and took a handgun and a rifle. He'd been wearing a gas mask and bulletproof vest. Witnesses said he opened fire after first walking into the theater and throwing explosive devices that emitted smoke.

UPDATE: Initial reporting put the dead at 14, but the toll was revised downward to 12. Ten died at the theater and two at hospitals. 59 other people were shot, the police chief said at a midday news conference.

UPDATE II: Talking Points Memo has rounded up scant information known so far on the man arrested in the shooting, James Holmes. No criminal record and the article says police believe his apartment was bobby-trapped. TPM posted the photo shown above. He was a student in a graduate medical program.

UPDATE III: Life imitates art imitating life imitating art: Will McAvoy, the fictional anchor on HBO's "Newsroom," is Twittering about the shooting. UPDATE: Add another layer. It's a parody Twitter account. Somebody imitating McAvoy.

UPDATE IV: And more from Twitter — the threads left by one of the victims, a young woman who'd been on the scene of a June shooting at a Toronto mall.
