Some odds and ends popped up overnight in the mailbox.
* MISS ARKANSAS: This pageant, relic of a bygone time, continues to draw an enthusiastic crowd to Hot Springs. Times photographer Brian Chilson was on hand for the crowning of Sloane Roberts, 19, of Rison, a University of Arkansas communications major, as the 2012 Miss Arkansas. See all his pictures at his Facebook page.
* JUDGE GRIFFEN REPORTS: Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen reports that he had surgery last week for facial fractures and dental repairs following his July 3 bicycle accident. Read the full report here. He said doctors are confident of a full recovery.
* MILITARY MISREPRESENTATIONS: Got a note, too, about a military Internet group on the trail of another case of service exaggeration, this one apparently by the leader of a local Arkansas affiliate of a veterans organization. I understand the offense taken and marvel at the energy and detailed research devoted to outing a Legion hut bar blowhard. If only all would devote similar energy to debunking empty talk about more than personal military service — say in the realm of public policy, legislation and delivery on campaign promises.
