Beware of free UA football tickets

SECURITY: Lance King with Bobby Petrino.

The quaint SEC practice of providing state troopers in full regalia as security forces for a football coach produced a little ancillary embarrassment this week. In matters growing out of the Bobby Petrino scandal, State Police Capt. Lance King self-reported himself for taking more than $2,500 in football tickets, a ring and some gear from the grateful Razorbacks for his service. The gratuities developed in reporting on King's service to Petrino in the extracurricular matter of his motorycycle wreck with a babe on board.

King will get a letter of caution from the Ethics Commission to settle the apparent violation of ethics rules, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported (pay wall) this morning. It's a gnat nip on the wrist, though undoubtedly an embarrassment to a career law officer with a good record.

Public employees may not accept gifts worth more than $100. Any other public employee ever received freebies to a Razorback football game, whether from UA or others, maybe even in rarified skybox territory? I wonder.
