The voter ID laws being pushed by Republicans are all part of a pattern with one aim — to suppress votes by constituencies that tend to favor Democratic candidates. Florida has always been a target because it’s an important swing state. That’s why U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin, then a gunslinger for Karl Rove, was hip-deep in Republican voter suppression in Florida in years past.

The Justice Department has had to intervene to halt the Florida Republican governor’s effort to purge voter roles based on inaccurate lists that have already targeted legal U.S. citizen voters.

A federal judge has stepped in to block enforcement of a Florida law aimed at discouraging voter registration by third-party groups. Such devious groups as the League of Women Voters have been hamstrung by the law.
