Blogger Hugh Mann reported last night on the open line that UALR students had been robbed by a group of teens in a parking lot on the west side of the residence halls on University Drive. An emergency alert was distributed at 10:56 p.m.

The alert system sent this update at 8:28 a.m. this morning:

This is a follow-up to the crime alert issued last night to the UALR campus community. A robbery occurred at about 10:15 p.m. Friday night in Lot 10. Two male students were approached by a group of black males ranging in age from early to mid teens. One of the suspects asked to use the victim's telephone to call his parents. When the suspect got the phone, the group of teens walked away and started to run. One of the victims came toward them to get the phone back. In the chase, one of the suspects punched the student. No serious injury occurred. The suspects were all dressed in white or gray t-shirts and black shorts.

Because this was a robbery with a student involved, and a student social event was scheduled that evening in the DSC, the decision was made to send out the alert via the Rave alert system, which allows for a short message only.

If you witnessed this crime or have any information about it, please contact DPS at 569-8797 or 569-8793, or call the University Police dispatch office at 569-3400.

Smart phones are frequently targeted for theft. These devices should be password protected and the serial numbers recorded for your protection.

ALSO: Channel 4 reports a drive-by shooting at people standing near the Peabody Hotel about 1:40 a.m. this morning. Injury wasn't critical to the one man shot, but as many as three cars had windows shot out. Police apparently were attempting to break up a crowd that had formed nearby at Markham and Scott (about a block east of the Peabody) when the shots were fired.

Fox 16 says a car that fled down Main Street and from which shots were believed to have been fired had a shot-out window and three other cars were found with gunshot damage. Police found 10 shell casings in the area.

UPDATE: Three people were robbed, and one of them was pistol whipped, by two men who stole about $1,600 in cash and two phones in an assault about 2 a.m. today at an apartment in the 2300 block of Rebsamen Park Road. The men jumped the victims as they prepared to enter the apartment.
