Is there an angrier man in Arkansas politics than Rep. Jon Hubbard of Jonesboro?
He's been apoplectic over the University of Arkansas forum on education for undocumented immigrants. Undocumented immigrants were allowed to speak. Chancellor David Gearhart eloquently defended the campus' educational role in response to earlier Hubbard criticism.
Now Hubbard, in an e-mail shared with all Republican legislators (presumed by him, I guess, to be friendly to his immigrant bashing), says:
I am requesting a full and complete audit of the University of Arkansas Fayetteville Chancellor's Office, to verify if there were any taxpayer funds used in connection with the "Undocumented" panel discussion, which took place under the direction of said office, on Monday April 23, 2012.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
I guess he's within his rights to ask that taxpayer money be squandered on auditing the source of payment, if any, for a legal activity. Surely Hubbard is not suggesting that immigration status disqualifies one from speaking or being spoken about at a forum at the state's premier university. This is a very slippery slope.
