UPDATE: Made it, just ahead of 9 p.m. after a two-hour brunch. I had pecan-crusted Gulf fish (sheepshead) after another shrimp remoulade starter, then Ponchatoula strawberry shortcake (below). Dessert was splendid, but Arkansas strawberries are better. Just a fact.
Hit of the morning was some grocery shopping at a new Rouse's market on Baronne street, in a sleekly made-over former Cadillac dealership near Lee Circle. It made me want to buy a condo in the warehouse district to be in walking distance of it and Cochon and August and lots, lots more.
There isn't a grocery in Little Rock that can match this New Orleans chain, whether in produce, wine selection (premium reds kept cool in giant steel-and-glass coolers), gourmet-to-go, fresh seafood (fresh softshell crabs, $2.99 each), custom meat (a wide selection of market-made sausage, including, get this, rib eye steak sausage), make-your-own burrito bar or baked goods. All this amid comprehensive staple groceries from canned goods and frozen food to cleaning supplies. Check it out. We loaded up on New Orleans specialties, from Camellia brand beans to New Orleans coffee, Zaps chips, po boy loaves and condiments and pickled stuff galore.
