A short stroll from where I sit, brass bands are blaring as part of the French Quarter Festival. So I know what I'll be doing tonight, after some shrimp or stuffed flounder somewhere.
PS, Twitter seems quiet except for the continuing Petrino convulsions, But I do note, with some amusement that Republican-oriented blogger Jason Tolbert has found a smoking gun in the 2nd Distrrict Congressional race — a society photo of Democratic candidate Herb Rule at a garden party to raise money for Planned Parenthood.
Amusing in several respects. Republican Win Rockefeller once held one of these Planned Parenthood garden parties at his house on Hill Road, for one thing. The current nominee, Mitt Romney, once was not only friendly to Planned Parenthood, but supportive of abortion rights, until he wasn't. For another, I doubt Central Arkansas differs much from the national polls where the majority objects to efforts to further restrict availability of contraception by cutting off support for Planned Parenthood, which provides contraception.
In short: Good for Herb Rule. And good for Planned Parenthood for its legal medical services, including family planning, basic health care including cancer screening and pregnancy ending medication. These are legal activities. They enjoy broad support. You won't hear much from Rep. Tim Griffin, the incumbent Republican, about the evils of Planned Parenthood in Pulaski County, except for before targeted audiences. Pulaski, the dominant county in the 2nd District, solidly voted down the state constitutional amendment by which anti-abortion forces attempted to make abortion illegal in Arkansas. So far, the U.S. Constitution has stood in the way. I doubt Herb Rule will be the least bit apologetic for his support of health services for women.
