An Arkansas State Trooper was shot last night during a traffic stop on Highway 278, near the border of Hempstead and Howard counties.

A press release from the Arkansas State Police this morning said that Corporal Pete Penney, an 8-year veteran of the ASP patrol division, stopped a car driven by Herman Lee White, 66 of Hope just before 9 p.m. last night. Soon after Penney radioed in the traffic stop, he requested assistance, saying shots had been fired. Officers from nearby Nashville responded to the scene and found both Penney and White wounded.

Penney was transported to a Hot Springs hospital, where he is in stable condition. White is currently in a Texarkana hospital, also in stable condition. White will be charged following his release from the hospital.
