Iran war mongering. Is it a winner for Republicans?

President Obama spoke forcefully yesterday in response to Republican politicians seemingly anxious to go to war against Iran.

“Those folks don’t have a lot of responsibilities,” Mr. Obama said. “They’re not commander in chief. When I see the casualness with which some of these folks talk about war, I’m reminded of the costs involved in war” — for those who go into combat, for national security and for the economy. “This is not a game,” he added. “And there’s nothing casual about it.”

“If some of these folks think that it’s time to launch a war, they should say so, and they should explain to the American people exactly why they would do that and what the consequences would be,” he said.

This makes perfect sense to me. But that's me. Are the Republican politicians right? Are the majority of Americans so fearful and/or bellicose that — despite the recent decade of unending loss of life and treasure in Afghanistan and Iraq — that they hunger to mount a military campaign against another country in the Middle East? I guess that's what elections are about, along with the black face and funny name of the commander in chief.

Speaking of presidential politics: All I have to say about Republican primaries last night is that 62 percent of the Republican voters in Ohio did NOT vote for Mitt Romney. Go, Rick, go.
