Killing a cat and painting "liberal" on it is gruesome and sick, but putting stickers of rifle crosshairs put on the office doors of women serving in the Missouri legislature yesterday is something more sinister.

This on the day that Democratic Rep. Gabby Giffords, who announced earlier that she would step down from her seat representing Arizona while she recuperates from a gunshot to the head fired by a madman at a public event last year, made one of her final appearances at the U.S. Capitol for President Obama's State of the Union address.

According to an article in the Columbia Tribune, orange stickers were placed on the doors of all four Democratic women in the Missouri Senate and on one male senator's door. A sticker was also placed on the office door of a Republican, state Rep. Scott Diekhaus. The Missouri Capitol police are investigating.

Diekhaus is quoted in the Tribune article as saying, “If anyone thinks this was a prank, it is not a prank. ... You don’t joke about someone’s personal safety.”

Capitol police are stepping up security.

SPEAKING OF TERRORISTIC ACTS: A postscript re the killed cat: PETA is offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the arrest of the killer. TThe killer wrote the word "liberal" in black on the mangled cat's body.
