It makes recommendations in this letter related to recruitment. City figures show about 12 percent of the pool of applicants for police jobs were minorities, though they make up about 25 percent of the population. The coalition doesn't have fire department figures.
The City Council didn't respond warmly to a diversity presentation last night. One Council member objected to a flyer listing a 1.4 percent minority representation among police because he said the civilian police workforce was 23 percent black and 77 percent female. The flyer related only to the percentage of sworn officers, of course.
