  • MORE HABITAT FOR ELK? These are grazing at Ponca on the Buffalo River.

The Forest Service and Game and Fish Commission have a proposal pending to expand the habitat for elk in Pope, Newton and Searcy counties and the comment period is drawing to a close. This is a hot topic because — much as some like to gaze upon the elk and shoot at them in the limited hunting now allowed — they have proved a nuisance to many land owners.

The Newton County Times has a full report on the issue. I didn't know until I read this that the Rocky Mountain elk — with a population of 500 now, up from 112 reintroduced into the area — is not native to the state. The smaller eastern elk that once roamed there is extinct, the article says.

Habitat will be expanded by bulldozing, burning and poisoning forest to create grazing areas. A couple of counties have passed resolutions against the expansion.

You got an elk in this hunt?
