Our item yesterday about a Naval custom — "first kiss" after deployment — celebrated by a same-sex couple was the most commented of the day.

No different anywhere else.

Jim Romenesko talks with the reporter who covered the story for the Virginian-Pilot, which chose to use the actual kiss photo, rather than the chaste version chosen by the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, to illustrate a story about a kiss.

What's next, one reader asked, bestiality photos?

The reporter says the vast majority of comments she received were critical. People on that end of the spectrum do seem a whole lot more prone to spew vitriol. Judge reaction, too, against the tens of thousands who saw the photo and weren't moved to write a letter. And the significant number who cheered the milestone the photo represents — open service of the country by people freed from a legally imposed closet.
