Lots of news coverage of a Navy ritual yesterday in Virginia, the sharing of a "first kiss" after a sailor returned home from an extended deployment. The news yesterday was the first same-sex kiss in the new era of legal gay military service — between Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta, returning home after 80 days at sea, and her partner, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citalic Snell.
The Democrat-Gazette covered the story fully this morning and included a photo of the two sailors, but it did not choose to show the kiss itself. The lip-smacking was widely available and appeared to be the choice in most media, judging by a cursory Google survey, including the Reuters shot below that was published, along with many others, in The Week. Too disturbing an image for Arkansas readers, maybe? What say you, Arkies? (Deputy Editor Frank Fellone declined an opportunity to discuss editorial decision-making.)
