Washington: gridlock continues

The Senate deal on the payroll tax cut — a two-month punt — appears in trouble with House Republicans. If they can't leverage it into a wish list of dearly held dogma, they don't want it. Both parties seem inclined to think they can earn an edge with voters. The Republicans by protecting tax cuts for the wealthy and cloaking their key objective with an all-out fight for a problematic pipeline. Democrats think they'll be viewed as advocates for the middle class by pushing so hard for the payroll tax cut.

I think the greater likelihood is that this adds still more points to an overwhelming disapproval of Congress. People are sick of two-month extensions and half-baked compromises that only beget more of the same.
