Thanks to Mike McNeill's Magnolia Reporter for news of yet another Republican candidate for Congress in the 4th district. He's John Cowart, a Texarkana police officer with a pronounced Religious Right bent currently serving with the Marine Reserves as a lieutenant colonel in Afghanistan. This might take a tiny bit of the sheen off Tom Cotton, the Washington consultant who moved home to make a race for Congress built heavily on his past military experience. Cowart's website has him armed in combat gear, naturally.

Beth Anne Rankin, the GOP nominee in 2010, has no military experience, but she has just received a concealed carry permit. I'm still leaning toward the idea of a firing range challenge rather than a debate for 4th District candidates. Incumbent Democrat Rep. Mike Ross unfortunately isn't running again. He's a marksman, too. Don't know about the other Republican, Marcus Richmond.

Sen. Gene Jeffress has announced as a Democratic candidate. And Republican-friendly D.C. Morrison — a spoiler in the 2010 U.S. Senate race — also says he may run as a Democrat to aid the Republican cause. A Ross aide mentioned as a potential candidate won't be, Roby Brock says.
