The Oxford American is out with another of its Southword productions in conjunctions with NPR — film, words and radio reporting. This time its on The Slammer, a local paid tabloid full of mugshots from local lockups. It's a derivative of others around the country.
Here's NPR report on the voyeuristic appeal of the mugshot tabs, steadily facing free competition from newspaper websites. I just don't know if a website is a match for the handy newspaper package, permanent and handy for perusal and passing around as buyers guzzle a Big Gulp from the convenience store where Slammer is sold.
Even more interesting is an accompanying article on historic Arkansas prison mugshots (one below). They form the basis for a book by a New York history professor.
