  • CHARGED IN MURDER: Carter Wilcoxson
Sherwood police today announced Carter Wilcoxson had been charged with capital murder in the slaying of Katherine Cleary, 74, whose body was found in August near the Galloway exit of Interstate 40.

Police had been searching for Clearly since responding to a home alarm and finding her gone. Her car was also missing, but later found about two miles from where her body was found.

Police arrested two women who'd made purchases with Clearly's credit card at a Walmart. Rhonda Glassburner-Strong, 51, of North Little Rock, was charged with tampering/obstruction of evidence, theft by receiving and fraudulent use of a credit card. Sonia Bell, 39, of Jacksonville, was charged with theft by receiving. But they've continued to work on a case against the killer.

Wilcoxson became acquainted with Cleary while working for a neighbor, police said. He's been in custody since August on drug and parole violation charges.

Today, October 17th, 2011, an arrest warrant was issued and served by the Sherwood Police Department, charging Carter Wilcoxson with Capital Murder in the death of Katherine Cleary. Wilcoxson has been in law enforcement custody since August 23, 2011, on charges related to drug possession and parole violation.

I want to thank our detective division and narcotics division for their tireless work on this case. Also, I want to thank the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office, the Pulaski County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, and the Arkansas State Crime Lab who all played an important role in helping us with our investigation.

During the investigation it was determined that Wilcoxson and the victim, Katherine Cleary, had become acquainted while Wilcoxson was doing work for a neighbor of Ms. Cleary. Carter Wilcoxson and Ms. Cleary’s relationship continued after Wilcoxson was no longer working in the area.

The continuing investigation of Katherine Cleary’s murder could result in other arrests and charges.

We are not releasing the cause of death at this time due to the ongoing investigation

The Sherwood Police Department has remained in contact with the family of Ms. Cleary during the course of the investigation and will continue to do so. The family’s cooperation and understanding during such a difficult time for them has aided us in our ability to conduct this homicide investigation.
