Dollar General adds beer sales at 50 Arkansas stores

Stephens Media reports that the state Alcoholic Beverage Control Division has approved 50 of 64 applications by Dollar General to sell beer at its retail stores.

Permits were denied where objections were made to applications, but those denials can be appealed to the ABC Board.

Cheap, convenient and small. It's the Dollar General way and it occurs to me it presents something of a threat to other retailers. Noted in the story is state Rep. Jon Woods of Springdale, who objected to all the permits in his area for the stated reason that he doesn't believe a proliferation of beer merchants is "responsible."

I'm sure his opposition has nothing to do with the traditional opposition to grocery store beer sales by the old Springdale-Fayetteville booze cartel, crippled in recent years by ABC decisions. Coming ABC Board action on appeals in Fayetteville, Springdale and Tontitown will be interesting.
