Uneventful here. All the football teams I follow are playing tonight, or played earlier in the week. For the schadenfreude crowd — Vanderbilt 30, Ole Miss 7.
Speaking of football, Lindsey and I talked about Taylor Branch’s widely read article on the shame of big-time college football on this week’s podcast. What to do about it? Realistically, colleges won’t return to no-scholarship, play-for-fun football. But here’s a nice feature in the New York Times about a former football college powerhouse, one of the country’s elite academic schools, which now plays the sport just for fun in Division III. It’s the University of Chicago. Fun story. Read about how they recruit athletes who must also be top students.
Photo below shows the “Monsters of the Midway” in Chicago back in the days of big-time football. They now play before 1,400.
