To mark the start of another school year, I offer some links to a blog, the Lolly Diaries, by Laura Cartwright Hardy, former newspaper writer and school teacher, who has significant first-hand experience with classroom life, particularly in the era of No Child Left Behind. The Obama administration has proposed a departure from NCLB's test-based rigidity and Hardy sees some hope in Arkansas's move to emphasize a common core curriculum.
In the meanwhile, she reports on her work in three decades of teaching in all three public school districts in Pulaski County in a three-part blog series.
First, The 1980s.
Then, the "glory years" in the 1990s in North Little Rock.
Finallly, her decision to retire from the classroom.
I'll only add this. The class in introductory journalism I taught part-time for two years at Philander Smith College was the hardest work I ever did. It was also, by my lights, the least successful. The fault did not lie with the students.
