It's open. Closing thoughts:

* PODCAST: Sorry, no Arkansas Times Podcast this week. Host and engineer Lindsey Millar and just about everyone else are in New Orleans for the annual convention of alternative newspapers. It will be back next week, though not with me. I hope to be heading toward Normandy about then.

* GAME AND FISH: A reader asks: how come no announcement of the new Game and Fish Commission member to succeed the fellow for whom Lake Conway was just renamed? Announcements traditionally come around July 1. The governor's office says things are running behind schedule (obviously) and an appointment should come by the end of the month. I'm not looking for Beebe to name the first gay G&FC member — though there are plenty of rich, white, old gay men. But maybe it's time for the first full-term appointment of a woman. I can dream, can't I?

* MUHAMMAD MURDER TRIAL: The defense today continued making its case that Abdulhakim Muhammad wasn't mentally competent when he shot soldiers outside a Little Rock military station. The trial recessed at mid-afternoon and will resume at 10 a.m. Monday.

* OUT OF THE CLOSET: It's official. President Obama has certified the end of discrimination against gay people in the armed services. After a 60-day waiting period, the policy will be fully implemented and gay people will be able to serve both proudly, as thousands already have, and openly.
