Murdoch's poisonous corporate culture



Don't let the Wall Street Journal (a shameful Murdoch tool now) or any of the Fox Nation blowhards fool you. The Rupert Murdoch scandal is about a great deal more than the British tabloid wars. It's about a corporation that has frequently cut corners, bought off critics and operated beyond the pale, including in the United States. You could try to argue that Fox News is somehow exempt from this, but its non-coverage of the Murdoch scandal is the conclusive answer to that.

David Carr in the New York Times today illustrates the Murdoch pattern. It's a must-read.

Learn about an unfair trade practices complaint in Minnesota. About a complaint on Murdoch company's hacking — yes, hacking — into a competitor's computer files to obtain proprietary information and disseminate harmful information. About $500 million paid to settle a complaint about anti-competitive practices in the U.S. by a company that sells grocery store coupons. Check out leadership at the Murdoch unit involved in this:

News America was led by Paul V. Carlucci, who, according to Forbes, used to show the sales staff the scene in “The Untouchables” in which Al Capone beats a man to death with a baseball bat. Mr. Emmel testified that Mr. Carlucci was clear about the guiding corporate philosophy.

According to Mr. Emmel’s testimony, Mr. Carlucci said that if there were employees uncomfortable with the company’s philosophy — “bed-wetting liberals in particular was the description he used” Mr. Emmel testified — then he could arrange to have those employees “outplaced from the company.”

Where is the delightful Mr. Carlucci now? Still head of News America, also publisher of the New York Post, Murdoch's flagship U.S. tabloid.
