* SEVERANCE TAX: The attorney general's office today approved the ballot title and form of the ballot initiative proposed by Sheffield Nelson to raise the severance tax. Next stop: gathering 70,000 or so signatures to get it on the 2012 election ballot. (Or perhaps, again, motivate the 2012 legislature to improve the current tax — not likely.)
* ULTERIOR MOTIVE: Republican Rep. Charlie Collins of Fayetteville is telling the world he wants a Hispanic majority legislative district created in Northwest Arkansas. Writes Collins: "This representative will have a unique voice that will give access to views and ideas important to a distinctive community of interest among Arkansans." Pardon my cynicism, but has it occurred to anyone else that Collins wants to move Democratic-leaning Hispanic voters out of his district and into that of a neighbor to improve HIS election chances?
