Granite Mountain support for quarry expansion

An item here over the weekend referenced civic activist Kathy Well's criticism of a deal to allow Granite Mountain Quarries to expand its mining operation nearer the Granite Mountain community, long unhappy about the blasting. The criticism was less about the deal than the fact that it was sprung as an agreed deal by at-large City Director Dean Kumpuris with expected routine approval this week. The public and all directors weren't fully apprised and City Director Erma Hendrix, who represents the ward, wasn't included in the discussions.

Here's a bit more on the background.

1) A letter from the Granite Mountain neighborhood association approving the deal. It says the quarry company will become a member of the association and has begun work on restoring a neighborhood park as part of the deal.

2) A letter from Rev. Hezekiah Stewart, head of the Watershed social service agency in Granite Mountain, speaking highly of the quarry company.
