Offhand, I can't recall anything quite like this. Maybe you can. The director of a state agency is fired (performance-related, allegedly). A special interest group — several of them, actually, including the Black Legislative Caucus — protests. The governor intervenes. The director is rehired.

The Times' Leslie Newell Peacock has, on her Eye Candy Blog, all the details on the firing and rehiring of H.L. McGill as director of the Mosaic Templars Cultural Center, the state-run museum at Ninth and Broadway about the black experience in Arkansas. His defenders dispute criticism of his earlier performance as director of the museum.
