Thanks to several night owls for adding to the open line last night the Little Rock School Board's selection of Morris Holmes, currently interim superintendent, to lead the district through the 2012-13 school year.
I'd thought there was a distinct possibility the board would reject finalist June Rimmer as a choice and that Holmes would continue on an interim basis, but I was surprised by the decision to end the search and stick with Holmes for two years. He is a known quantity with many friends from a long time here before taking the superintendent's job in New Orleans. There's been a lack of hubbub during his interim service.
Holmes' choice was interesting because a reservation I had heard from one Little Rock district activist was a desire for a younger leader than Rimmer, who's 61. Holmes is 71. This 61-year-old is not complaining, let me be clear.
Holmes served a year previously as an interim and sought, but wasn't chosen, to lead the district in 2004, when the ill-fated choice of Roy Brooks was made.

The Little Rock School District Board of Education announced the selection of a new school superintendent, Dr. Morris Holmes of Little Rock.
Dr. Holmes has been serving as Interim Superintendent, his second time in this capacity, following the January 6, departure of former superintendent Dr. Linda Watson. He has agreed to serve as Superintendent through the 2012-2013 school year.
"The board has been very impressed with Dr. Holmes work as Interim Superintendent," said Melanie Fox, school board president. "We believe that he has the experience, talent, commitment and sense of urgency required to lead the LRSD purposefully down the path of improved student outcomes."
Dr. Holmes responded, "My job for the next two years will be to implement our strategic plan with an intense focus on the needs of our students. LRSD has great potential, and I am committed to doing the hard work necessary to help the District realize its full potential for the benefit of our students, educators, staff and community.
