Little Rock down to one candidate for superintendent

Two more candidates have dropped out of the running for the job of superintendent of the Little Rock School District. Board president Melanie Fox's update:

Today we were notified that Dr. Walter Milton, Jr., Superintendent of Schools for Springfield, Illinois, and Hugh Hattabaugh, Chief Operating Officer for Charlotte/Mecklenburg School no longer wish to be considered as candidates for the position of superintendent of the Little Rock School District.

This means that our district now has one candidate for the position of superintendent, Dr. June Rimmer, of Renton, WA, the Program Director of the Stupski Foundation in California. We will proceed with Dr. Rimmer's scheduled visit next week for Monday, May 9, 2011.

The Board of Education wants to assure parents, faculty and the community that we will only hire a district leader who demonstrates all the qualifications previously identified.

I can only guess that continuing divisions on the board played at least some role in these decisions. The special meeting this week — no matter who's side you might have been on — didn't suggest a candidate was out for a walk in the park.
