Contraception saves money

Good column by Gail Collins that illustrates how Tea Party math and Religious Right zealotry ends up costing us all money when it comes to conservatives' battle to interfere with women's reproduction.

The setting is Texas, but it could just as easily be the Arkansas Republican caucus. The myths of the anti-abortion lobby are so pervasive that Texans will kill support for birth control pills, despite the clear evidence that lack of contraception leads to more children, some with great medical needs, for the state to support, not to mention desperate women seeking more abortions.

This is a good place, too, for a free link to Salon and Gene Lyons' column this week on the Republicans' "War on Arithmetic" and rock-headed male resolve, as personified by Paul Ryan. It's all very much a piece with Texas Republican budgeting madness.
