UA Board meeting on president search

The University of Arkansas Board of Trustees, meeting today in Monticello, has gone into executive session to discuss the search for a president to succeed retiring System President B. Alan Sugg. Board chair Carl Johnson had said earlier that he did not anticipate a vote on a successor today, but that decisions would be made on how the search would proceed.

Until now, there has not been an application process so as to shield the identities of people interested in the job who've been talking with Trustee John Ed Anthony. Johnson said he favored applications for the job.

I'm supposed to receive a report when the Board reconvenes after the closed session.

UPDATE: Dr. Johnson has asserted leadership of the search process and indicates it may take several more months. It could lead to asking Sugg to stay on as interim leader while the search proceeds. Johnson indicated today, as he had to me earlier this week, that he's interested in casting a broad net for candidates. Unanswered at this minute is whether this means that John Ed Anthony will exit the board and make way for Gov. Mike Beebe's pick to replace him. He'd been staying on past the end of his term to lead the search for president. Interest continues on the part of some board members to push an in-state candidate, particularly former Farm Bureau president Stanley Reed of Marianna. There's a group of at least equal size on the board who oppose Reed's selection.
