Bible study bill fails in Senate committee

John Lyon of Stephens Media reports that Rep. Denny Altes' bill to encourage academic study of the Bible in Arkansas public schools was defeated in the Senate Education Committee today.

Good. It is already possible to develop courses in which the Bible is studied in a literary and historic context and several schools, including Little Rock Central, have done so. Altes' bill was poorly written and driven by his own view that we don't have enough church in government, not a good beginning point for a constitutional use of the Bible in public school.

SPEAKING OF RELIGIOUS LOBBY ISSUES: Lyon also reports that Sen. Sue Madison's bill to outlaw lottery vending machines — a favorite of the Family Council — did not come up in House committee and that committee isn't scheduled to meet again.
