You can't be anything but dismayed about the 200-plus students who had to find a new school to attend this week after the state Board of Education abruptly closed the Little Rock Urban Collegiate Public Charter School because of egregious financial mismanagement. I sympathize with those who protested the closing yesterday.

But a better course for some unhappy parents than reflexive defense is, first, a read of this reporting from Channel 4. The suggestion is that financial and management problems might prove to be worse than honest mistakes. Enrollment was misrepresented. State money was taken in on that inflated basis. One school official is taking exception to another official's characterization of the situation. Some forensic accounting is in order.
