The perils of high-stakes testing

As Arkansas and the rest of the country moves inexorably toward an educational system shaped by the philosophical outlook of Walton money, we'd do well to take note of news developments in a world where test scores are everything. Such as:

* A blockbuster project by USA Today that found evidence of cheating across the country on school standardized test scores.

* The six Los Angeles charter schools closed because of widespread cheating on standardized tests.

The Daily Howler (former teacher Bob Somerby) comments at length.

Doesn't mean you don't test. But it's useful perspective on the binary view — you should hire or fire, bonus or penalize based on test scores.
