Dermott School District begins staff cuts

A lively thread developed last month on news that the Dermott School District was considering cuts in extracurricular activities — including football, cheerleading and the yearbook — to balance the budget in a district with declining enrollment that's dropping near the point of state-required merger with a neighbor.

The yearbook adviser emailed me this morning to say he and perhaps 11 more staff members had been given notice of non-renewal for the next school year and other employees may see reductions in stipends and days worked. Bus drivers are to learn today about changes in routes.

Whatever the individual circumstances — and debate rages in the district over the efficiency of this district's operation — Dermott remains emblematic of the withering Delta, a reality beyond the reach of the smartest school superintendent and school board.
