As Republican legislators mobilize to cut spending a touch to justify humongous tax breaks for the wealthy, the state issues its February revenue report.
The important numbers: Gross collections were up 1.8 percent over the same month a year ago, but below the forecast. The net was up significantly because of an unexpected drop in tax refunds, but that was offset by the unexpected weakness in income tax and sales tax collections.
It is not a report that suggests huge tax cuts would be prudent, if you believe in schools, higher education, prisons, state assistance for nursing home and health care, State Police and a few other similar luxuries.
